A pink slip is a safety inspection report, issued by an AIS which proves a vehicle has passed the required roadworthiness standards. A pink slip is used to renew a vehicle registration by mail or at a motor registry up to three months after the expiry date.

A blue slip is an unregistered vehicle safety inspection report, issued by an AUVIS, which proves a vehicle has passed the required roadworthiness, design and identity standards.

This is used:

• To establish an unregistered vehicle registration.
• When an interstate vehicle is registered in NSW for the first time.

Second-hand vehicles (including interstate and imported vehicles) may be selected for an additional inspection by the RTA's specialised vehicle identity unit.

A white slip is an inspection report (rejection slip), issued by an AIS or AUVIS, showing that a vehicle requires repairs. A white slip will be given if a vehicle fails the AIS or AUVIS inspection. However, once the repairs are carried out, the vehicle will receive a pink or blue slip.

The white slip can be used when selling a car to show what needs to be done to make the car roadworthy.
